Man Sentenced to 5 Years and 5 Months for Mobile Phone Theft Inside a Church

Zethio News | Crime & Justice

The Yeka Sub-City Police Department has announced that a man who committed mobile
phone theft inside a church has been sentenced to 5 years and 5 months imprisonment.
The ruling was issued after a full investigation and court proceedings confirmed
his involvement in the crime.

The suspect, identified as Daniel Demse, entered the “Ethiopian Evangelical Light of the World International Church”
located in Yeka Sub-City, Woreda 6, during prayer hours. According to police reports,
he infiltrated the women’s prayer area and stole mobile phones while congregants were praying.

How the Theft Happened

The incident came to light after a private citizen reported the theft to the police.
Based on this report, investigators immediately began examining the case.
Police confirmed that Daniel had entered the church premises and stolen:

  • Two Samsung mobile phones
  • Total estimated value: 173,000 ETB

Following the investigation, police successfully located the suspect and recovered the stolen phones.
The suspect and the phones were taken into police custody and handed over to prosecutors for legal action.

Court Verdict

The case was brought before the Federal First Instance Court – Yeka Division, 1st Criminal Bench.
After reviewing evidence presented by investigators and prosecutors,
the court confirmed that Daniel Demse was guilty of mobile phone theft inside a place of worship.

As a result, the bench sentenced him to:

5 years and 5 months imprisonment

The sentencing aims to serve as a deterrent against thefts committed inside churches,
which are supposed to be safe spaces for worship and spiritual gathering.

Police Issue Public Advisory

The Addis Ababa Police Commission has urged all worshippers to take necessary
precautions to protect their belongings during prayer hours, especially when large crowds gather.

Authorities emphasized that believers entering places of worship should secure their mobile phones
and other valuables in a safe manner. Police also encouraged the public to immediately report
any suspicious activity or incidents so that legal measures can be taken promptly.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining safety around religious institutions
and preventing theft-related crimes through sustained patrols, community cooperation,
and rapid response to reports.
